Long Live Games: Response
Costikyan tells a tale of too many marketers ruining an industry’s growth. Doesn’t only happen in games industry, Hollywood is just as guilty of emphasizing a brand name or following more than bringing anything new to the table. Same goes for the music industry. Creative types are finding it harder to get their ideas pushed out to the greater public as times go on and as marketing gets stronger, but as long as what does go out makes money, everyone is happy with everything. Innovation may be shunned, but we all live in a big house with two kids, a dog, and a semi parked in the driveway.
Online games are breaking away from the big publishers, just like independent movie studios and music labels have done in their industries. No wonder online gaming is getting so huge. It is currently the only place for new and risky ideas to be published and put out. Not only because it passes by the publisher labyrinth, but it’s also very, very inexpensive to put anything online. Inexpensive and easy has a price as well, however. Now we sift through dozens of sites that offer online games, many of them old arcade games recreated with the site’s name. It’s a small price to pay for the ability to innovate.
